Здавна студентство відзначалося активною життєвою позицією і відігравало помітну роль у суспільному житті. З одного боку, студентівхарактеризують як молоду інтелігенцію, майбутню соціальну та інтелектуальну еліту, з іншого ‒ за ними закріплюється стереотип буршівдебоширів. Назагал студентство має пограничне соціальне становище, а період навчання у закладі вищої освіти є перехідною формою від юнацького додорослого життя. Зазвичай у період студентства відбувається остаточне формування світогляду, набору цінностей, стилю життя. Можнастверджувати, що студентські роки є періодом транзитної ідентичності для молоді, який чітко відділяється від подальших чи попередніх етапів життя.Незважаючи на короткий період перебування у статусі студента, молодь що навчається, формує власні звичаї, традиції, особливі моделі поведінки, витокияких можуть бути пояснені шляхом вивчення минулого студентської спільноти.Студентство займає помітне місце в сучасному українському суспільстві. Період навчання у закладі вищої освіти значущий і визначальний етап в життідля великої частини молоді. Відповідно важливим дослідницьким завданням є вивчення особливостей матеріальної та нематеріальної культури студентства.Дослідження різних аспектів історії студентства може надати корисний матеріал для пояснення особливостей поведінки, цінностей, світоглядусучасних вихованців вищої школи, краще зрозуміти, які виклики і проблеми постають перед ними в період навчання у закладі вищої освіти.^UTraditionally students were differed by their active life position and played a prominent role in public life. Very often students are characterized as youngintelligentsia, the future social and intellectual elite, on the other hand, they attach to the stereotype of brawlers, who are opposed to the burghers. In general, studentshave an unstable social status, and a period of study is a transitional form from youth to adulthood. Usually, in the period of studenthood, there is a final formation ofoutlook, set of values, lifestyle. Student years are a period of transit identity for young people that clearly separates from further or earlier stages of life. Despite ashort period of student life (usually a few years), students learn to form their own customs, traditions and specific patterns of behavior, the origins of which can beexplained by learning about student communities from the past.During the last years, we had many changes and transformations of Ukrainian society, that's why an important research task is to study the peculiarities of thematerial and intangible culture of students. Research on various aspects of the history of students' communities can provide useful material to address thechallenges of today.Considering the importance of covering the history of the students' as a separated social group, the Ph.D. thesis is devoted to the study of the studentcommunity of St. Vladimir University in the years 1834-1863. Throughout this period the community had a number of specific features, which makes it possible toconfirm the existence of a separate student subculture of St. Vladimir University Based on theoretical works, we define the student subculture as an autonomousformation in a dominant culture, characterized by its own customs, norms, systems of values, which shapes and determines the lifestyle and way of thinking of itscarriers. One of the key features of a subculture is self-identification and its awareness of its own difference from the other social groups. The generalcharacteristic of any subculture combines the material (clothing, food, etc.) and the ntangible sphere (values, ideals, etc.).
