The paper discovers presence of endangered European minks (Mustela lutreola) in the region between Ukrainian Bystroe and Romanian Sulina estuaries of the Danube delta. The estuaries were elaborated to serve as navigation canals and while Sulina canal has been functioning continuously, the Ukrainian Bystroe canal has undergone a suspension in 1994 following the Balkan war and was filled with sediments so it could no longer be used for navigation. Ukrainian government decided to make the canal navigable. After dredging the first 3 kilometers of the shallowest section of the estuary, plans exist to dredge and widen the remaining 170 km of the estuary to make it navigable for particularly large ships. This article talks about investigation of mink presence and migration in the area and determination of the current and possible future consequences for the European mink's population in the Danube delta under the influence of the Bystroe canal restoration.
