The expression of SOD and catalase was studied by the RT-PCR method in liver of 62 young (3 - 5 months) and 58 old (23 - 26 months) male C57Bl/6 mice. Due to a relatively high size of the samplihg, we were able to show for the first time that in the populations of both young and old mice, the SOD and catalase expression is described by the normal distribution. No significant age-changes were found in the variability of the studied indices. Aging was associated with a significant decrease of the catalase (<$E P~<<~0,001>) but not SOD expression. The significant and almost identical correlation between SOD and catalase mRNA in both age-groups (<$E P~<<~0,01>) could evidence in favor of a coordinated action of the genes as a determinant for normal aging. The more detailed analysis of distributions revealed, however, that the ratio of animals with a higher expression of SOD and catalase declines in aging. It is speculated that the higher rates of superoxide generation and adaptive increase of the SOD and catalase expression in such individuals could be unfavorable for survival up to the old age.
