This book offers a group of essays published in memory of David Thomasma, one of the leading humanists in the field of bioethics during the twentieth century. The authors represent many different countries and disciplines throughout the globe. The volume deals with the pressing issue of how to ground a universal bioethics in the context of the conflicted world of combative cultures and perspectives.

The combination of environment and design has been termed ecodesign. Even if, as it appears, it would be more precise to use other, more specific terms, let us start with few ideas on ecodesign as it allows us to define better our application field (and because ecodesign is still widely used). So what is ecodesign? It is unquestionable that on the first comprehensive level the word eco-design is rather self-explanatory, as its general meaning derives directly from its component terms: eco-design is design following ecological criteria. Manifested as a compound expression of a vast complex of design activities, it tends to handle ecological questions with an upstream approach, i. e. redesigning the products themselves.

This volume grows out of an initiative in the World Bank on resource allocation and purchasing (“RAP”), which started in 2000, and continues to publish articles and books related to strategic purchasing. The initiative emerged from such questions in developing economies as: Why do individuals need help in purchasing health services from providers? Is the “middleman” really necessary? Can people not just buy health services in the same way they would go to the local market to buy bread, milk, or fruit—especially since, throughout most of history, that is what most people did? When sick, they contacted local healers directly. Public policy historically was limited largely to protecting the sick against charlatans and was enforced through ethical codes such as the Hippocratic oath. There was no expensive technology, and most serious conditions led to death. Loss of employment and burial costs were the most expensive parts of illness. With industrialization and the scientific revolution, all this changed. As understanding about the causes, prevention, and treatment of illness expanded, interventions become more complex and expensive. Health care was no longer the exclusive domain of traditional healers.

Entries range from 100 to more than 2,000 words. Some are complemented by black-and-white photographs and diagrams. Each entry is signed, and topical coverage includes a broad range of environmental perspectives, including scientific, political, and social issues. Most of the entries are followed by a brief bibliography. However, these bibliographies are inconsistent, some pointing to a large number of standard and useful sources, others leading the user to an odd selection of works that do not represent comprehensive or core treatments of the issue at hand. Additional sections include a brief (five-page) "Historical Chronology" of environmental events, a five-page chronology of "Environmental Legislation in the United States," organizations mentioned within the bibliographies accompanying encyclopedia entries, and an index to entries and terms.

This 2007 book examines environmental law from a range of perspectives, emphasising the policy world from which environmental law is drawn and nourished. Those working within the discipline of environmental law need to engage with concepts and methods employed by disciplines other than law. The authors analyse the ways in which legal activities are supported and legitimated by work in traditional scientific or technical domains, as well as by certain more obscure but also influential cultural or philosophical assumptions. A range of regulatory techniques is explored in this book, through a close examination of both pollution control and land use. The highly complex nature of current environmental problems, demanding sophisticated and responsive legal controls, is illustrated by several in-depth case studies, including legal and policy analysis of the highly contested issues of genetically modified organisms and renewable energy projects.

Guards are a key to history. Since the personal bodyguards and household troops of the different monarchies of Europe were the largest military force in their respective capitals, it was they who, in moments of crisis, decided the fate of the monarchy. In this small book David Hemenway has produced a masterwork. He has dissected the various aspects of the gun violence epidemic in the United States into its component parts and considered them separately. He has produced a scientifically based analysis of the data and indeed the microdata of the over 30,000 deaths and 75,000 injuries which occur each year. Consideration and adoption of the policy lessons he recommends would strengthen the Constitutional protections that all of our citizens have to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness

У монографії сформульовані концептуальні положення нової методології екологічного моніторингу – обсерваційної, парадигма якої ґрунтується на розроблених системах і математичних моделях реального та віртуального моніторингу довкілля за допомогою ландмаркових систем наземного, підземного, повітряного, водного та космічного базування. Представлені новітні технічні та технологічні висновки щодо метризації довкілля-простору, розробки геопросторових моделей обсерваційних систем моніторингу на прикладі м. Києва. Зазначається, що обсерваційні дослідження поділяються на класичні (традиційні) та неоновітні, застосовуючи концепти теорії конверсійного моделювання довкілля-простору із апробуваннням алгоритму обсерваційних сценаріїв результатів рекогностування із застосуванням краудсорсингових технологій цифрового картографування. Представлені та відтворені нові можливості дешифрування, ідентифікації та інтерпретації даних дистанційного зондування Землі та оперативних геопросторових моделей мережі інфраструктури екологічних обсервацій, що отримали дефініційне обґрунтування як еколандмарки. Визначені та знайшли підтвердження засади та концепції розробленої теорії формалізованого обсерваційного еколого-географічного картографування. Розроблена серія техноекологічних карт м. Києва, апробація проведена на проблемних полігонах геостаціонарних екологічних досліджень м. Києва.

Розрахований на науковців природничих та технічних наук, що займаються інноваційними проблемами реалізації проведення екологічного моніторингу засобами цифрової геодезії та картографії, геоінформаційних систем та аерокосмічних технологій.
