Much like Odysseus who had to negotiate perils between Scylla and Charybdis IT managers face daunting challenges. On one side, there is relentless pressure to cut costs. On the other lies an unending demand for innovative solutions. However, unlike Odysseus, IT managers must not simply avoid either fate: Instead, they must fulfill both quests. To meet these seemingly disparate goals, IT organizations are increasingly investigating the use of open source software for its cost-effectiveness and flexibility. However, myths about open source software persist for example, that it runs only on Linux or that it is not stable enough for demanding production environments. Dispelling those myths, leading companies such as Amazon.com and Google rely on open source software, and many more companies will make the switch in the years ahead.

If you are unfamiliar with how standards are developed, the history of the Rexx Standard may give some insight. The idea of a standard was first promoted by Linda Green, the IBM representative to the SHARE organization at the time. There was enthusiasm for the idea at the very first Rexx Symposium, which allowed Linda to make a case to the authorities, who allowed Linda to convene the first meeting. This was attended by several of the parties with a producer or user interest in Rexx and they "bootstrapped" themselves to being a committee by suggesting Brian Marks as chairman, a choice subsequently endorsed by the Information Technology Industry Council which administers this class of standard.

This book was begun in Berkeley and completed in Charlotte, and the research was supported in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
