The new edition of this standard legal reference is a worthy successor to the original. The encyclopedia contains a comprehensive overview of American law, covering historical and current terms, concepts, events, movements, cases, and significant persons. New cases, events, and trends have been thoroughly integrated into existing entries. Some, such as Absentee voting, Jurisdiction, and terrorism, have been substantially rewritten, while many others, such as Abington School District v. schempp, abortion, and Judge advocate have new content appended. Omissions from the first edition have been corrected, with new entries for Ralph David Abernathy, Bella Abzug, the Amistad mutiny, and the "abuse excuse" as well as for George W. Bush, Tom Ridge, and Kenneth Starr, of recent import. Of the more than 5,000 entries, 2,000 have been revised and 630 are new. Even the photographs have been updated--different photographs are often used, even when article content is the same. How were several hundred entries added and others lengthened while only one volume was added to the size of the set? The greatest change seems to be a sharp decline in the number of photographs, tables, and charts. Color has also been eliminated. Nonetheless, the set still contains numerous illustrations that enrich the text and help show the effects the legal system has on individuals. Other changes include the use of italics for the definitions that begin each entry on a legal term, making these easy to distinguish, and the addition of further readings to a majority of main entries. Useful features in both editions include "In Focus" essays on controversial issues, time lines for all biographical entries that show important moments in the subject's life as well as important historical events, a dictionary of legal terms, an index of cases, and a general index. An appendix volume has been helpfully renamed Primary Documents and contains the text of speeches, legislation, and historic legal documents ranging from the Magna Carta to the Treaty with Sioux Nation. The "Milestones in the Law" features, which have the text of landmark cases, briefs, and related documents, have been gathered into another appendix volume. This beautifully edited encyclopedia is highly recommended for high-school, community college, public, and undergraduate libraries.

This essay deals with the basic issues related to a legal assessment of the genocidal nature of the Ukrainian Holodomor of 1932–33 in the light of the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The main emphasis is to prove the intention of the totalitarian Communist regime to partially destroy the Ukrainian nation by using an artificial famine as an instrument for exterminating its major constituent part, the Ukrainian peasantry. The machinery for carrying out the Holodomor is explained and issues related to the responsibility of its ideologists, organizers, perpetrators and accomplices are raised. The author stresses the need for an of Ukraine in order to elucidate all of its circumstances and detrimental consequences.

This book explores the way in which quantum theory has become central to our understanding of the behaviour of atoms and molecules and the way in which this underlies so many of the experimental measurements we make, how we interpret those experiments and the language which we use to describe our results. It attempts to provide an account of the quantum theory and some of its applications to chemistry. The subject matter develops as follows: Chapter 1 considers the place of theory in science, emphasising in particular the significance of hypotheses, postulates and laws; Chapter 2 gives an account, in approximately historical sequence, of the development of the quantum theory paying particular attention to the emerging experimental data and the new theoretical concepts developed for their interpretation; Chapters 3 and 4 describe some fundamental details of the theory with explanations and simple, chemically-relevant examples. The Province of Jurisprudence Determined (1832) is a classic of nineteenth-century English jurisprudence, a subject on which Austin eventually had a profound impact. This edition includes the complete and unabridged text of the fifth (1885) and last edition. The comprehensive introduction discusses Austin's life, the main themes of his book, leading criticisms of his ideas, and recent interpretations of his legal philosophy. A bibliography and biographical synopses of the principal figures mentioned in the text are also included.

This book was written to present a general survey of the prehistory of Denmark as it has emergedafter the past decade of research. Up to the 1960s Danish archaeology was dominated by a handful of distinguished scholars: Sophus Müller, Johannes Brøndsted, Gudmund Hatt, P.V. Glob,and C.J.Becker. Moreover the discipline was strongly influenced by conti nental modes of thought, and the chronological problems were still the main focus of research. However, in Denmark as in other European countries, the 1960s became a period of change. A wave of new theories did away with the old diffusionistic framework. Many scholars spoke of a crisis in the profession. But as elsewhere in the west, the 1960s also marked the beginning of a rich productivity in the field, and today we can speak of at least three contrasting theoretical perspectives in Danish archaeology: positivist, marxist and structuralist. Each one of themhasbeen able to open up fruitful perspectives for future research. These changes first developed afterthe publication of the last major survey of Danish archaeology to be translated for readers outside Denmark, Johannes Brøndsted’s Nordische Vorzeit from 1960–3. It therefore seemed quite clear that both students and teachers in other countries would have need of a general introduction to theperspectives recently opened in Danish archaeology. It is this need which the present book see ks to meet. To be sure, many of the conclusions are preliminary, because detailed, systematic andup-todate studies are still required in many fields. Despite this lack, I have written the present boo k in the hope of providing a synthesis of the 10,000 years of Danish prehistory up to theearlystate formation of the Viking period. This wo rk could not have been written without theinspiration of many discussions with colleag ues in Denmark and abroad, too numerous to be me ntioned here. However, I owe special thanks to Professor Olaf Olsen, State Antiquary and Director of the National Museum of Denmark, who in 1975 encouraged me to write this book; to Professor J. Desmond Clark, University of California, Berkeley, who extended his generous hospitality to me during a stay in Berkeley in 1980; to Professor John Coles, University of Cambridge, who willingly offered advice in the preparation of this English edition; and finally to the Danish Research Council for the Humanities, which supported this project financially.
