By writing this work, the author continues the introduction of brand-new efficient methods in fluid flow and heat transfer that have been developed and widely used during the last 50 years after computers became common. While his previous two monographs presented these contemporary methods on an academic level in heat transfer only or in both areas heat transfer and fluid flow on the preliminary level, this manual introduces the modern approaches in studying corresponding mathematical models—a core of each research means determining its efficiency and applicability. Two types of new mathematical models are considered: the conjugate models in heat transfer and in fluid flow and models of direct numerical simulation of turbulence. The current situation of applications of these models is presented in two parts: applications of conjugate heat transfer in engineering (Part I) and applications of conjugate fluid flow (peristaltic flow) in medicine and biology and applications in engineering of direct numerical simulation (Part II). Although almost a decade has passed since the second edition of this work was published, this encyclopedia's reputation as a high-quality scholarly work has not diminished. Guided by an advisory board comprising leading researchers (including eight Nobel laureates), editor in chief Meyers (Ramtech, Inc.) used a peer review process that produced over 780 articles written by experts. The coverage in this third edition has expanded to include molecular biology, biochemistry, and biotechnology. The decision to eliminate articles on military technology contributed to the deletion of about 200 articles; however, nearly 300 articles were added to cover new topics such as molecular electronics, nanostructured materials, tissue engineering, superstring theory, and the World Wide Web. The remaining articles were either updated or rewritten. Averaging 17-18 pages in length, the well-written articles present detailed information in a logical, organized manner. All follow a basic format: outline, glossary, defining statement, main body, cross references, and bibliography. A separate volume contains a list of contents by broad subject area, a relational index with groupings of connected articles, and the traditional subject index. The 20-volume McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology (LJ 9/1/97) focuses on a broader range of scientific disciplines and a broader audience, so its articles are generally shorter and less detailed. With an intended audience of scientists and engineers and an emphasis on the physical sciences and technology, this encyclopedia aims to provide in-depth, authoritative coverage without limiting the mathematical treatment to algebra. This is an excellent source for students and researchers needing an overview of a particular subject. Highly recommended for academic and other types of libraries with significant science/technology collections. This report makes the point that in both Russia and China it is politics - and not market or commercial considerations - that largely drive energy relationships with each other and the outside world. For both countries, energy and energy security is regarded as a strategic asset and/or objective that are at risk from outside forces. The conditions that each state has attached to their energy policies ironically preclude the kind of easy cooperation seen in other strategic and political issues between Moscow and Beijing. In both Central and Northeast Asia, Russia has blocked Chinese efforts to realize its version of energy security, yet it has not been able to come up either with the resources or means for a coherent policy of supplying China with reliable quantities of energy that would lead China away from non-Russian producers. The under-fulfilment of the potential for Russia to supply China will continue and continue as well to be a source of strain in their relationship. We don’t have an energy crisis. We have a consumption crisis. And this book, which takes aim at cherished assumptions regarding energy, offers refreshingly straight talk about what’s wrong with the way we think and talk about the problem. Though we generally believe we can solve environmental problems with more energy—more solar cells, wind turbines, and biofuels—alternative technologies come with their own side effects and limitations. How, for instance, do solar cells cause harm? Why can’t engineers solve wind power’s biggest obstacle? Why won’t contraception solve the problem of overpopulation lying at the heart of our concerns about energy, and what will? This practical, environmentally informed, and lucid book persuasively argues for a change of perspective. Задачник составлен в соответствии с программой курса «Техническая термодинамика» для теплотехнических и теплофизических специальностей энергетических вузов и факультетов. Все задачи снабжены ответами, а наиболее типичные — подробными решениями. Предлагаемый задачник предназначен в качестве учебного пособия для студентов теплотехнических и теплофизических специальностей энергетических втузов и факультетов и отвечает соответствующей программе курса «Техническая термодинамика». Задачник может быть использован при упражнениях на практических занятиях в аудитории и дома. Этой книгой могут пользоваться и студенты других, неэнергетических вузов. Работая над задачником, авторы использовали свой опыт педагогической работы в Московском ордена Ленина энергетическом институте и расположили материал в такой последовательности, в какой обычно излагается программа курса в МЭИ. Ввиду того что в Советском Союзе с 1 января 1963 г введена как предпочтительная международная система единиц (СИ), большая часть задач дана в этой системе Авторы 'испытывали затруднения применяя ее, в связи с тем, что, составляя задачи, они не сполагали нормативными материалами "(таблицы и диаграммы лдяного пара, таблицы термодинамических свойств газов и др.), оставленными по повой системе. Часть задач и ответов к ним даны В старых единицах, что авторы считают необходимым, учитывая сложность «переходного» периода. Сущность системы, ее положи тельные стороны и отличие от технической системы авторы постара лись подчеркнуть в решениях некоторых задач раздела «Парамет ры состояния» и «Первый закон термодинамики» Содержание некоторых разделов заметно отличается от того ма териала, который предлагался в ранее изданных задачниках. Так, составляя раздел «Реальные газы», авторы предложили задачи, даю щие некоторые понятия о способах обработки экспериментального материала ('применение метода конечных разностей, пользование таб лицами и диаграммами обобщенных свойств веществ). Эти задачи могут быть полезными для студентов-теплофизиков. Задачи подобно го типа могут быть предложены для домашних упражненийВ разделе «Теплоемкость газов в идеальном состоянии» авторы сочли нужным поместить несколько простейших задач па вычисление теп л ос-емкостей газов по формуле Эйнштейна, для того чтобы дать хотя бы некоторое представление о том, как вычисляются термоди намические функции при помощи квантовой теории теплоемкости В разделе «Влажный воздух» приведены задачи с применением /й-диаграммы для повышенных давлений воздуха.
