Новая книга из серии "100 великих" посвящена профессиональным вокалистам: прежде всего исполнителям оперной музыки последних трех столетий, а также вокалистам джаза, рока и поп-музыки, ставшим столь популярными в XX веке.

Україна дала світу чимало яскравих і цікавих особистостей. І сто героїв цієї книги – лише дещиця з їх числа. Автори намагалися представити в ній найбільш видатні постаті минулого і сучасності, тих, хто своєю працею і талантами прославив країну, вплинув на хід її історії. «Нація виявляє себе не лише в людях, яким вона дає життя, але й у тім, яким людям вона віддає почесті, яких людей пам'ятає», – говорив Джон Кеннеді. Якщо звернутися до історичної пам'яті української нації, то протягом тривалого часу головними її символами незмінно залишалися Богдан Хмельницький, Тарас Шевченко, Леся Українка, Іван Франко, Михайло Грушевський. При цьому варто зазначити: життєписи були настільки ідеалізовані й оповиті всілякими міфологічними нашаруваннями, що скоріше нагадували історичні архетипи, ніж біографії реальних людей. Тому, розповідаючи про цих видатних особистостей, автори прагнули зняти з їхніх портретів хрестоматійний глянець і познайомити читача з маловідомими фактами їхнього життя і діяльності. Іще більш далеким від історичної правди було представлено в біографічній літературі життєвий шлях таких державних і політичних діячів, як Іван Мазепа, Симон Петлюра, Нестор Махно, Степан Бандера. Тривалий час їхня роль в історії України викликала суперечливі оцінки, які робили з цих людей не національних героїв, а ізгоїв суспільства. Суперечки навколо них тривають і сьогодні, але навіть їхні супротивники не можуть не визнати того, що всі вони, безсумнівно, є неабиякими особистостями, які виявили чимало сили волі й мужності в найтрагічніші періоди життя країни. Донедавна українці вкрай мало знали про своїх видатних співвітчизників, які з різних причин були змушені залишити батьківщину. Більшість із них забуто. Така ж доля випала й тим, хто став жертвою сталінських репресій, представникам дисидентського руху, борцям за права людини в Україні. А тим часом саме ці люди сприяли зростанню авторитету української науки і культури далеко за межами країни. От чому в сучасній галереї видатних людей України гідне місце посідають Михайло Драгоманов і Олександр Архипенко, Серж Лифар і Володимир Винниченко, Дмитро Чижевський і Микола Бердяев, Василь Стус і В'ячеслав Чорновіл. Серед героїв цієї книги – не лише українці, але й представники інших національностей. Їхні імена тут не випадкові, оскільки для одних Україна була малою батьківщиною, інші тривалий час жили і працювали на українській землі вже в зрілі роки. Не можна не погодитися з російським ученим, академіком Д. Лихачовим, який стверджував, що «національні особливості зближують людей… а не вилучають їх із національного оточення інших народів, не замикають народи в собі». Тож не варто дивуватися тому, що в історичній пам'яті українського народу почесне місце завжди посідатимуть імена Шолом-Алейхема, Івана Айвазовського, Архипа Куїнджі, Миколи Пирогова, Іллі Мечникова, Сергія Прокоф'єва і багатьох інших видатних «неукраїнців». До речі, вони були набагато мудріші за деяких своїх нащадків і ніколи не відокремлювали свою долю від української землі і того народу, серед якого жили і діяли. Варто згадати хоча б рядки з листа М. Гоголя, адресовані А. О. Смирновій-Россет: «Скажу вам одне слово щодо того, яка в мене душа, хохляцька чи російська. Я сам не знаю, яка в мене душа. Знаю тільки, що ніяк би не віддав переваги ні малоросіянину перед росіянином, ні росіянину перед малоросіянином. Обидві природи надто щедро обдаровані Богом, і, як навмисно, кожна з них порізно містить в собі те, чого немає в іншій…» Ці слова, написані в середині XIX століття, залишаються актуальними й сьогодні.

Over the past two centuries, many aspects of criminal behavior have been investigated. Black gospel music grew from obscure nineteenth-century beginnings to become the leading style of sacred music in black American communities after World War II. Jerma A. Jackson traces the music's unique history, profiling the careers of several singers--particularly Sister Rosetta Tharpe--and demonstrating the important role women played in popularizing gospel. Female gospel singers initially developed their musical abilities in churches where gospel prevailed as a mode of worship. Few, however, stayed exclusively in the religious realm. As recordings and sheet music pushed gospel into the commercial arena, gospel began to develop a life beyond the church, spreading first among a broad spectrum of African Americans and then to white middle-class audiences. Retail outlets, recording companies, and booking agencies turned gospel into big business, and local church singers emerged as national and international celebrities. Amid these changes, the music acquired increasing significance as a source of black identity. These successes, however, generated fierce controversy. As gospel gained public visibility and broad commercial appeal, debates broke out over the meaning of the music and its message, raising questions about the virtues of commercialism and material values, the contours of racial identity, and the nature of the sacred. Jackson engages these debates to explore how race, faith, and identity became central questions in twentieth-century African American life.

The last twenty five years have seen dramatic rises in the prison populations of most industrialised nations. Unable to keep up with increased numbers of convicted offenders, governments and criminal justice systems have been seeking new ways to control and punish offenders. One sanction adopted in Canada and some parts of Europe and the US is community custody which attempts to recreate the punitive nature of prison but without incarceration.

These days we look to Wikipedia for the truth. A neat illustration of this occurred not long before I sent up the manuscript of this book to the publishers. A pparently Gordon Brownhad claimed in a speech that he had much in common with the artist Titian, who did his best work in his dotage and reached the age of 90. A few days later, at 12.34 p.m. on 12 February 2009, someone at Conservative Central Office altered the Wikipedia article on Titian so as to reduce his age at death. This allowed David Cameron to go on the offensive at prime minister’s question time the same day. ‘The prime minister never gets his facts right,’ said Cameron. ‘You told us the other day you were like Titian aged 90. The fact is Titian died at 86.’ Two simple, yet potentially significant, propositions lie behind the themes of this book. The first, which I suppose as a historian I have always had in the back of my mind, is that the new – novel institutions, original ideas – usually turns out to be a lot older than we thought. The second, to which I have more recently come, is that, in cultural matters at least, working with one’s peers can get one further than trying to go it alone. I attempt here to illustrate and combine these two points of view by looking at certain historical group projects, and comparing them with another project that was born in the present century – Wikipedia. What sparked off my interest in these particular ‘communities of practice’ in history and on the Internet was the fact that I have myself for several years been a member of just such a community. In our village there is a flourishing archaeology/local history group whose members share the fruits of their efforts and collaborate in joint publications much as wikipedians do, though admittedly the international dimension is somewhat lacking. Recently we too have set up a ‘wiki’ site, www.greatayton.wikidot.com, to which anyone in the group may make a contribution. From these experiences it has been brought home to me that sharing and participation, while immensely enjoyable in themselves, are also just as efficient and productive a way to operate as is the more usual path of the solitary researcher. I want to thank Simon and Tom O’Sullivan and Janus Olsen for reading drafts of the book and making numerous useful suggestions.
