Other conventional mathematical programs require numerical values for all variables. Упродовж всієї історії людства невпинно зростав загальний обсяг інформації, яку людині треба зберігати та опрацьовувати. Вважається, що в наш час обсяг інформації подвоюється приблизно кожні десять років. Робота з нею неможлива без різноманітних автоматичних пристроїв, головну роль серед яких відіграє комп'ютер. Комп'ютер — це електронний пристрій для програмованої обробки інформації. Слово “комп'ютер” до нас надійшло з англійської мови (computer — обчислювач, тобто пристрій, який виконує обчислення). Спершу комп'ютери призначалися для автоматичного розв'язання математичних задач, їх називали електронно-обчислювальними машинами, скорочено ЕОМ. Але з розвитком технічних засобів комп'ютер став не тільки обчислювальною машиною. У сучасному розумінні комп'ютер призначений для опрацювання, зберігання інформації будь-якого типу. Це зумовило широке використання комп'ютерів в усіх, без винятку, галузях діяльності людини.
