In much the same way that photography forced painting to move in new directions, the advent of the World Wide Web, with its proliferation of easily transferable and manipulated text, forces us to think about writing, creativity, and the materiality of language in new ways. In Against Expression, editors Craig Dworkin and Kenneth Goldsmith present the most innovative works responding to the challenges posed by these developments. Charles Bernstein has described conceptual poetry as “poetry pregnant with thought.”

It is our hope that this collective volume, starting from the idea of the ‘independent reader’, might inspire a new approach to Petrarch’s reception in the Renaissance and the Early Modern Period. For, if Petrarch already during his lifetime could proudly boast that he was read by a large audience, this book intends to shed a new light on the reading processes from the 14th to the 16th century, its creative re-readings, and its stunning transpositions of Petrarch’s text into new literary and artistic discourses. Even if we know that, again, this new light will be insufficient since ‘Pétrarque continue à nous échapper par le jeu de ses multiples représentations’, we hope that it will inspire fruitful re-readings of the creative Petrarch-readings of the past.

Published on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Shevchenko's birth. According to its editor, "the book aims to comprehensively acquaint the English-language reader with the life, works and ideas of the great Ukrainian poet. To this end, in addition to his most important poetic works, the volume includes Taras Shevchenko's autobiography, one of his novels, excerpts from his diary and specimens of his painting." A claim is made that "most of the translations have been done specially for this volume, while those that have appeared in print previously have been revised for this publication." Ievhen Kyryliuk's introductory article (pp.11-19) provides a sketch of the poet's life and some bibliographical data on Shevchenko translations into English and other foreign languages. Editorial notes (pp.457-469) decipher, explain and interpret obscure references to personal names and historical allusions. The volume is illustrated with 19 black and white reproductions of Shevchenko's paintings and drawings.

Ivan Franko was a Ukrainian poet, novelist, writer of short stories, playwright, satirist and publicist who lived and worked during the latter half of the 19th and the early years of the present century. His prolific and versatile pen left a great imprint on the people of his day as well as on the generations that followed. That is why today his name is honored and revered wherever Ukrainian people live. As his writings were translated into more and more languages his world stature grew. Today he is recognized as one of the great writers of the past century. Only a few of Ivan Franko’s poems had been translated into English. The present volume of translations is a representative selection of the great writer’s works in the English language. Since Franko’s complete writings fill fifty volumes, gathered here are only a very modest sampling: some of his best known poems, a few of his many short stories and excerpts from novels. A brief biography is also included in the introduction. This book of Ivan Franko’s writings in English translation has been published on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of his birth.

This book is based on my M.A. thesis of the same title, which was handed in at the Karl-Franzens-University of Graz, Austria, in May 2001. Parts of the book were revised in 2002 at the University of Dortmund, Germany, where I taught a proseminar on contemporary American performance poetry. Thanks are due to my students, who not only engaged in stimulating discussions on many parts of this book, but also took part in a poetry jam at the ‘Subrosa’ in Dortmund, where students and local poets from Dortmund and guest students from the USA experienced poetry as a social and cultural event.

Surrealist Women displays the range and significance of women's contributions to surrealism. Penelope Rosemont, affiliated with the Paris Surrealist Group in the 1960s and now a Chicago poet and painter, has assembled nearly three hundred texts by ninety-six women from twenty-eight countries. She opens the book with a succinct summary of surrealism's basic aims and principles, followed by a discussion of the place of gender in the origins of the movement.The texts are organised into historical periods ranging from the 1920s to the present, with introductions describing trends in the movement for each period; and each surrealist's work is prefaced by a brief biographical statement.

In 1967 we were living in Springfield, Missouri, and I had just turned nine. I was riding in the car with my mother and “Strawberry Fields Forever” came on the radio. I was terrified. It didn’t sound like anything I’d ever heard before with its odd pulsing tones and droning, nearly monotonous vocals. It seemed nightmarish. To reassure me, my mother started to explain what the lyrics meant and how the sounds were supposed to approximate what was going on with the singer’s emotions and in his mind. It was one of the pivotal moments of my life. I dedicate my work on this book to my mother, Sue. Mom: thanks for helping to keep me from living with my eyes closed.

В центре внимания автора – рыцарская дружба Андрея Белого с Александром Блоком, его взаимоотношения с Валерием Брюсовым, Дмитрием Мережковским, Зинаидой Гиппиус, Максимилианом Волошиным, Вячеславом Ивановым, Максимом Горьким, Мариной Цветаевой, Всеволодом Мейерхольдом и другими властителями дум российской интеллигенции.
