The monograph examines the process of formation and development of the Ukrainian memoir tradition of the twelfth century – the first third of the twentieth century. Memoirs are presented and analyzed as a historical and cultural phenomenon and an important communication resource with the inherent characteristics of a historical and biographical source. Particular attention is paid to the unique properties of the memoir narrative, which for centuries has been one of the key national-centered components and at the same time levers of national history. First of all, the author analyzes the potential of memoirs to act as repeaters of historical and national memory. Their role as a distinctive content and communication resource aimed at establishing humanistic ideals and shaping the values of Ukrainian society during its difficult path to state independence is also actualized. The array of memoirs has been studied in a variety of contexts of historical and political transformations, authors, genre palette, and thematic subjects, with the identification of significant figures of national history who are in the focus of memoir narratives. The monographic study is addressed to historians, literary critics, cultural studies scholars, librarians, information specialists, and anyone interested in the Ukrainian memoir tradition.
