Grade 6-9-From concept to copyediting, this unwieldy survey of applied mathematics falls short in nearly every aspect. Each of the 80 alphabetically arranged chapters, from Addition to Zero-Sum Games, takes on a curriculum-centered topic. They open with a definition, close with a brief list of further sources, and in between quickly lay out fundamental terms and ideas, historical background, and descriptions of Real-life Applications. The latter often include word (rarely number) examples, but also tend to be nonspecific, if not outright simplistic; online purchasing over a secure connection is safe, for instance, because hackers can't decode the content even if they somehow manage to intercept the message somehow. Under Algebra, the entry on making tradeoffs between lifespan and voltage when Buying Light Bulbs assumes that small variations in voltage are an option. In addition, despite substantial duplication of topics, there are no see references to connect related entries, such as those for carbon dating or sports wagering. Printed in two large volumes of dense, double-columned, seldom-illustrated text, this is less likely than the textbooks that it is supposed to compliment.

The importance of polymers in energy, high technology, and public health requires that scientists in all fields, lawyers, and environmentalists, not to mention members of the general public who want to to discuss and use polymers wisely, have a basic understanding of these materials. In 1980, editor and publisher Moshe Y. Sachs set our ro create the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations, a new kind of reference work that would view every nation of the world as if through a "world mirror" and not from the perspective of any one country or group of countries. In 1981, a companion volume, the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the States, was introduced. It was selected as an "Outstanding Reference Source" by the Reference Sources Committee of the American Library Association, Reference and Adult Services Division. The Gale Group now offers a revised and updated sixth edition of the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the States. The fitness of the United States of America as a subject for encyclopedic study is plain. No discussion of world politics, economics, culture, technology, or military affairs would be complete without an intensive examination of the American achievement. What is not so obvious is why the editors chose to present this work as an encyclopedia of the states rather than of the United States. Digital signal processing (DSP) refers to anything that can be done to a signal using code on a computer or DSP chip. To reduce certain sinusoidal frequency components in a signal in amplitude, digital filtering is done. One may want to obtain the integral of a signal. If the signal comes from a tachometer, the integral gives the position. If the signal is noisy, then filtering the signal to reduce the amplitudes of the noise frequencies improves signal quality. For example, noise may occur from wind or rain at an outdoor music presentation. Filtering out sinusoidal components of the signal that occur at frequencies that cannot be produced by the music itself results in recording the music with little wind and rain noise. Sometimes the signal is corrupted not by noise, but by other signal frequencies that are of no present interest. If the signal is an electronic measurement of a brain wave obtained by using probes applied externally to the head, other electronic signals are picked up by the probes, but the physician may be interested only in signals occurring at a particular frequency. By using digital filtering, the signals of interest only can be presented to the physician.

Practice gets a raw deal in the field of applied linguistics. Most laypeople simply assume that practice is a necessary condition for language learning without giving the concept much further thought, but many applied linguists eschew the term practice. For some, the word conjures up images of mind-numbing drills in the sweatshops of foreign language learning, while for others it means fun and games to appease students on Friday afternoons. Practice is by no means a dirty word in other domains of human endeavor, however. The evidence has become notorious. As our chronological distance from Nazism and its phenomenal core the mass extermination has increased, the latter's historical weight has grown as well. No introduction can do justice to this paradox's many sources, some of which I explore in the chapters that follow. Let us here simply note that the growing centrality of the Holocaust has altered the entire warp and woof of our sense of the passing century. If, well into the 1970s, wide-ranging portraits of the epoch would grant the Holocaust a modest (if any) mention, it now tends to fill the entire picture. The incriminated event has thus become the epoch's marker, its final and inescapable wellspring.

The present book is an attempt to contribute to filling this gap, albeit a quite subjective one: I tried to address this issue by referring to different phenomena in subatomic physics studied or predicted over the last decades and to which I contributed personally. Some of the predictions have been confirmed, others are still in the pipeline and quite a few might never be verified or even proven wrong. Still, I hope that even those in the last category might be useful, if not for any other reason than to prevent somebody else from repeating these mistakes. Given the general readership to which this book addresses itself, I attempted to present the effects discussed at a level accessible to the non-specialist.
