The collective work “Institute of Manuscript of Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. 1918–2018” is a jubilee scientific edition dedicated to the hundredth anniversary of the foundation in Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine of a manuscript department, which later was transformed into the Institute of Manuscript. Over the multi-year activity of the manuscript department of the Library, various reporting and informational materials on the history of the Institute and its funds were published, although a complex generalizing research representing a hundred-year path of the institution has been prepared for the first time ever. Chronological framework of the publication is declared in its very title: the first information about the department of manuscripts dates back to 1918, and now, in 2018, it functions already as the Institute of Manuscript with four scientific and applied science departments. With a crucial significance for submerging into the history of Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine the research is also a valuable contribution into the study of objective processes, which took place in the national culture and intellectual life of Ukraine for the last hundred years. The work for the first time presents a substantial historical essay on the foundation and development of the manuscript department of the Library, covers main principles and methodology of the manuscript funds acquisition, represents a scientific component of the institution. The sources for the publication were documental complexes of the Library Archive and the Institute Archive, in particular reporting materials, administrative documents, which helped to fully recreate the personnel of the department / Institute for the one hundred year long period. The section “Editions of the Institute of Manuscript”, systematized by a topic-chronology principle, actualizes the bibliographic information, which for the first time jointly gathers practically all the editions, which were published with an active participation or with an assistance of the staff of the Institute and in its сooperation with other scientific and public institutions in Ukraine and outside its borders. Important for the study of the impact of a human factor on the development of the manuscript department of the Library are biographical materials, thoroughly discovered and systematized in the certificates, composed for each employee of the department / Institute. Beside the biographies, they also cover the directions of scientific and applied (librarian) work, and also provide a full bibliography of works of the staff, compiled under the scheme: separate editions, articles and reviews in collections of scientific works, in encyclopedias and other applied science editions, editorial work, compilation and composition. Significant from the point of view of the information value are indexes of the applied science edition, in particular the article, dedicated to the contents and composition of the manuscript fund of the Institute, as well as the list of archival funds, which covers the modern state of the institution funds replenishment.
