Born as serf, Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) lived to become Ukraine's greatest poet. His works were seen diversely by his critics as national prophecy, social protest, or lyrical outpouring and provided raison d'être for the modern Ukrainian nation while remaining to this day the finest manifestation of Ukrainian romanticism. This collection of essays provides overview of criticism on Shevchenko's live and work, from the time of his death to the present, drawn from the writing of Soviet, European, American and English critics.
